Spend this 4th of July with the State Capitol! The Capitol is hosting a free, fun-filled family event that has become a Raleigh tradition. An outdoor naturalization ceremony for new citizens will take place at noon on the Capitol’s south grounds. After the ceremony, the traditional “Salute to Independence” will feature a reading of Thomas Jefferson's most noble achievement, “The Declaration of Independence.”
Open from 12pm to 5pm, the event will offer a variety of musical performances, carriage rides, and several hands-on activities for children to enjoy. Join us for sack races, try your hand at quill writing, pie the redcoat, or dress up like a Revolutionary era citizen! Visitors will also have the chance to listen to patriotic tunes performed by the Raleigh Concert Band!
The Capitol building will be open and available for touring. Inside the Capitol, visitors can also see a letter that showcases the signature of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States, Founding Father, and author of “The Declaration of Independence.” The document, on loan from the State Archives of NC, is part of the Archives’ vault collection and not often available for public viewing. It will be on display at the Capitol until July 11th.
